the battle is still far from done. >> a fire burns dangerously close to an east bay neighborhood. how neighbors tried to protect their own homes. >> the heat wave is over. much cooler temperatures are on the way. we'll have details coming up. >> if you do have to work this morning, at least it will be a nice ride across the golden gate bridge. this plus a check of mass transit is all coming up. >> good morning, it is friday, july 5. 6 a.m. i'm anne makovec. >> and i'm brian hackney. michelle and frank are off this morning. we have developing news this morning. the end of the bart strike for now. >> trains are scheduled to start running at 3:00 this afternoon. finally bart and two unions agreed to extend their old contract for 30 days. that means this is temporary. they now have until august 4 to reach an agreement. contract talks are set to resume on monday. we have team coverage this morning. elizabeth wenger checks your commute. first, though, kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran in millbrae with

the deal that end the walkout. cate. >> reporter: good morning. this is good news for commuters today because it means they will be able to take bart home this afternoon and trains will be back up and running. we know negotiations ended right at around 11:00 last night. the two sides decided to extend bart's old contract for 30 days while they work on the new one. it was a proposal from the california labor secretary. but the unions say the battle is far from over. they say bart needs to understand that this is a 30- day deadline to get it right. >> bart bullied us, bullied their riding public, and they have mercenaries in here trying to bust up our unions. that's unacceptable. >> reporter: now, there is nothing saying that the unions can't come to the end of the 30- day period and call for another strike but at least these 30 days will alleviate some of that pressure from the public and give them time to talk.

but we still don't know the details of the negotiations. remember, there is a gag order in place for both sides but again we can't reiterate enough that this 30 days is going to be enough time hopefully for both sides to come to a negotiation and at least keep commuters happy. reporting live in millbrae, we'll be right back. >> do we even have a sense of how things are going inside these negotiations? >> reporter: well, anne, unfortunately from what i heard from union workers it's not going well at this point in time. the two sides are still very much far apart especially with sticking points like salary and safety. safety was a big issue that the union worker brought up to me yesterday that bart still hasn't addressed that. that's just coming from one point of view. thank you. bart is providing free shuttle buses from the east bay to san francisco. they are picking up passengers in five stations in the east bay this morning the same ones that they have done all week. yesterday, it was a case of more buses though than riders

because of the holiday. the short lines in walnut creek here were in stark contrast to those long lines we saw the previous three days. now to elizabeth wenger in the traffic center. how are the roads looking? >> reporter: they are great. if a bart strike happened it's nice to be on a holiday week. the chaer bus service are still in the effect this morning starting at 5:00 a first come, first served thing. as soon as they reach capacity that's it for the morning. bart service is set to resume at 3 p.m. it's been an easy commute all morning long so there is no delay at all this morning driving in. similar story on our maps. muni and caltrain on a regular weekday schedule. ac transit is stepping up their schedule between the east bay and san francisco all week. they have really been helping out while the strike has been in effect. east bay drive times in the clear, green on 580 on the nimitz and east on the

eastshore freeway. gren is what we likes to. green is what we like to see. back to you. there are a number of issues to be resolved in the bart contract talks. there are still several issues to be resolved in those contract talks, one of them pay. the unions want raises for workers who agreed to a wage freeze and other concessions four years ago. bart is asking workers to pay more for their healthcare costs. and the district wants workers to start contributing to their pensions. stay with us for coverage on the strike. find our strike survival guide with commute alternatives on kpix.com. fireworks may be responsible for a fire that came dangerously close to homes and businesses in the east bay last night. kpix 5 reporter da lin joins us from pittsburg. da, we understand people living in the area brought out their garden hoses to stop the fire, is that right? >> that's right. they were working hard to make sure they can save their homes. we understand the fire actually

burned in an open field right behind that warehouse that large warehouse right there. things are calm and under control at this point. the fire no longer a threat. last night it was burning very hot and fast threatening a lot of homes and warehouses in this pittsburg community. it happened around 9:00 last night between willow pass road and north parkside drive. the 50-acre fire was advancing to homes. homeowners were using homeowner hoses to try to stop the fire. fireworks started the fire. neighbors noticed a lot of illegal fireworks and so they were so concerned that they were actually patrolling the area. >> it's frustrating because you actually never get a chance to have a true holiday. you're actually spending a lot of time being pro-active for homeowners to be sure they are

not losing their most important asset. >> reporter: firefighters are still looking over to see if there are any hot spots. i called the dispatch this morning. they say things are now okay. but they did notice some hot spots earlier this morning. again, things are under control at this point. but they are telling folks to be extremely careful telling homeowners reminding them to be vigilant given that the grass is still pretty dry and there are still some fuel out here in the pittsburg community. back to you. there was another fire in martinez a grass fire sent towering flames near homes along trail view circle last night. flames were up to 60 feet. two acres burned. neighbors say the kids were playing with fireworks before that fire started. and chopper 5 was over a fire in the oakland hills in joaquin miller park. no word on the cause. but fireworks are blamed for at

least some of last night's fires. our camera captured several fireworks lighting up the oakland skyline last night. some were the illegal type. a kpix 5 crew hit the streets in an area called deep east oakland where the fireworks display rivalled ones put on by the professionals. people were gathering in the streets igniting fireworks that went hundreds of feet into the air. some of the most popular ones are called coliseum fireworks because of the size. all fireworks are illegal in oakland. people say they bend the rules for the kids. >> i think it all depends what kind of fireworks you're popping. if you are going to get explosives like the m1,000s those are illegal. but a little show for the kids it will be fine. >> now, from what our crews saw kids were kept on the sidewalks away from the fireworks. 15 bay area cities including san bruno, petaluma and union city do allow safe and sane fireworks. those are the ones that stay on the ground. now, lawrence is dragging a

little bit this morning because you were up late watching fireworks. >> there are many fireworks like that all around the bay area not just oakland but what a sight just lighting up the bay area last night and the fog holding off. but that's changing off today. the fog moves onshore today. cooler temperatures are on the wear. the fog at the coastline is coming inside the bay now. in fact, it was clear a few minutes ago over the bay bridge. now we are starting to see patchy fog developing there and toward the oakland hills. so looks like the heat wave is coming to an end. temperatures will be cooling down. in fact, we're running much cooler now this morning. 50s and some low 60s. actually had some temperatures in the 70s. so it is going to be cooler today. some nice heat relief inland. these temperatures dropping off 10 to 20 degrees. about 83 degrees the expected high in livermore with sunshine. 78 in san jose. and 68 degrees and breezy in san francisco. we'll have more on your weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. oakland city workers and

its leaders are expected back at the bargaining table today. more than 3500 employees there walked off their jobs for a one- day strike on monday. unions say workers have been bearing the burden of oakland's budget problems for far too long. the save ccsf coalition will hold a news conference this afternoon announcing their plans to respond to wednesday's decision by the state commission, you may have heard, city college lost its accreditation because the commission found it didn't meet program criteria. nearly 85,000 students currently attend that college. time now 9 minutes after 6:00 on your friday morning. caught up in a crisis! how some bay area students managed to escape the chaos in cairo. >> that wasn't supposed to happen. >> major fireworks mishap. we are live in southern california where dozens were injured during a 4th of july celebration. >> and boats burning. what may have sparked this fast- moving fire. reworks ,, ,,,, mom, frank ate the bones.

everyone is taking this long holiday weekend. so you're good to go if you have to work this morning. you won't have a lot of company as opposed to earlier this week where the bart strike wreaked havoc all over the morning commute. the san mateo bridge was a huge problem spot. but right now westbound 92 is great out of hayward. we have a chp-issued high wind advisory advisory in effect there. the nimitz 880 in oakland, all your overnight roadwork has also been suspended for the holiday so no delay near oakland airport, oakland coliseum. and checking some of our maps now, once again the strike is halted. that charter bus service is in effect this morning and then you can get a roundtrip ticket and it will take you back to the east bay later tonight. first come, first served started at 5:00 this morning. but i'm told that the lines are shorter than earlier in the week. muni and caltrain are operating on a regular weekday schedule. no delay by the way. and ac transit is still offering that transbay bus

service or extra stepped-up service even with this holiday friday between the east bay an san francisco. so your drive times are still in the clear. we're really not seeing any hot spots, accidents or delays. that is the latest on your "timesaver traffic" where things are calming down traffic- wise. and it sounds like weather- wise, as well. >> yeah. we are going to be cooling things down today. low clouds and fog gathering along the coastline. that sea breeze is ramping up this morning. that means we're in for a big cooldown. some of the temperatures dropping 10 to 20 degrees from yesterday's highs. of course, we've seen seven straight days of triple digits in the valleys. so it is going to be cooler toward the afternoon. coastal fog lingers even inside the bay. and then much cooler over the weekend too. i don't see a major heatup in the next seven days. high pressure sliding eastward making its way in from the gulf of alaska. that will drop the temperatures around the bay area here and

across parts of the state. sacramento 89. hot in fresno at 105. 99 in yosemite. low clouds and fog at the coastline surging onshore and overnight into tomorrow we are going to see it race onshore and fill in the bay and valleys so cooler temperatures in store for the weekend. and it looks like we'll keep them down for the foreseeable future. 82 degrees the expected high in morgan hill with sunshine there. 78 in san jose. 66 fog in pacifica. east bay temperatures running into the 80s where we had 100- degree readings just yesterday and you will see 60s and 70s inside the bay. the next couple of days we are going to keep those temperatures down throughout the weekend. then slowly warming up next monday and tuesday but no heatup, no triple digits in the forecast. >> all right, mr. karnow. thanks. that wasn't supposed to happen! >> more than two dozen people were injured in a fireworks accident in southern california last night. simi valley police say a batch of fireworks misfired. cbs reporter kara finnstrom

joins us live from ventura county. kara, do they know how it happened yet? >> reporter: they are still investigating but they are getting a better feel for it and they believe it was an accident. just behind us is a field where this all took place. you can see some of the debris strewn across in some of those exploded fireworks there. cameras were rolling last night when they blasts rang out. we want to show you some of that video. you're seeing fireworks shooting off into a nearby crowd of onlookers during the first few minutes of the show. this is this accident from a number of views. simi valley police tell us they believe at least one firework launching station fell over. they also say there's no indication of foul play. and federal officials are investigating this as an industrial accident. there were about 50 officers and civilians staged here for this annual fireworks show. and investigators say they ran in immediately to help. let's give you a look at the huge triage operation that followed. we're told victims ranged in age from 8 to 78 and suffered both shrapnel and projectile type injuries.

we did speak with one of the witnesses to the blast. >> there were things going into the crowd. they were shooting up in the air. snow started billowing everywhere. panic settled in. >> within seconds, the fireworks were right in our face. really what it was. i just think it's a miracle nobody got killed or hurt seriously. >> reporter: back here live, you can see a police unit that's guard, the field. not all the devices were detonated because the show was immediately halted. a bomb crew did come in and render what's remaining safe but officials don't want anything disturbed until authorities can photograph the scene and a pyrotechnics crew can actually remove all those devices. if we pan over quickly, you can see some of the lawn chairs, a barbecue, a flag, things that were just left behind because it was so frightening when it all occurred that everyone immediately left. live in simi valley, kara finnstrom, kpix 5. >> thank you.

developing news about the change in leadership in egypt. the african union has suspended egypt's membership over the ouster of its president. it comes as protests continue in egypt this morning. supporters of ousted president mohamed morsi are calling it a friday of rage. they are protesting the military's decision to take morsi out of office. morsi's opponents say the overthrow was not a coup. >> it was a popular impeachment of the president. it didn't start by the actions of the army. it was the people. >> president obama's also reluctant to call the change a coup. that's because it's against united states law to give foreign aid to countries where the military overthrows an elected government. some bay area exchange students were rushed out of egypt. 10 students mostly from uc- davis were evacuated from an island in the nile. they arrived at sfo yesterday. >> she wasn't worried. >> uc was definitely worried about us and kind of shot us out of there as fast as they

nothing like this... surveillance cameras captur men stealing a- million dol worth of vodka f you hear about bank heists, jewelry heists but probably nothing like this. surveillance cameras captured five men stealing a million dollars worth of vodka from a florida warehouse. a couple of weeks ago they drove up in a mercedes, broke through a concrete wall and they didn't set off any alarms. apparently, they knew what they were after when they got inside the ukranian sipping vodka, which sells for $249 a bottle. part of the bottle is made of 24kt gold. good morning. at this hour the warriors very much in the mix for free agent big man dwight howard. late information last night says that the warriors executives have found trade destinations for three of their biggest contract holders. this could free up $20 million to just throw at dwight howard. these were for bogut, jefferson and another player. howard could make his decision as early as sometime today. let's go ahead and take a

morning, the bart strike is over! at least for now. trains are scheduled to start running at 3:00 this afternoon. bart and two unions agreed to extend their old contract for 30 more days. so this is only a band-aid fix. they now have until august 4th to reach an agreement. contract talks resume on monday. we have team coverage for you this morning. elizabeth wenger will have an update on your commute from the traffic center, but first we go live to kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran in millbrae with details of this deal. cate. >> reporter: good morning. i just saw the lights on the bart trains behind me go on. that's happy news for commuters this morning. that means they can take bart home thanks to this new agreement. now, this agreement will allow the trains to get back up and running while bart and the unions negotiate. so the strike is effectively done for the moment. this is a proposal suggested by the labor secretary. he approached both sides yesterday to talk to them about the tentative agreement that

will allow the trains to start running as soon as possible. >> i'm delighted to report that the parties have agreed to accept the recommendations of the mediators and myself to return to work and continue the collective bargaining process under the guidance of mediators for the next 30 days. >> reporter: both sides feel 30 days will be enough time to come closer in the negotiations while at the same time getting these trains back on track not to mention keeping commuters happy. but there is nothing saying that they can't come to the end of the 30-day period and then decide to strike again. of course, nobody is hoping for that. we are hoping that they are able to come to a new contract agreement and, of course, keep these trains running and ease that traffic on the roads and speaking of which, let's send things over to elizabeth wenger in the traffic center. let's take a look at how things are looking this morning. liz, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, cate. everything is great so far this morning even though the bart strike is still on as of right

new this morning, fireworks may be responsible for a fire that spread close to homes and businesses in the east bay last night. kpix 5's da lin joins us live from pittsburg. usually fires are fought with fire hoses, da, but we understand they were fighting them with garden hoses? >> reporter: yeah. they were very concerned with the last-ditch effort they pulled out the garden hoses to stop the advancing flames. but the fire apparently happened right behind that large warehouse in an open field. the fire department telling me this morning that things are now calm and under control. and the fire is no longer a threat. but last night, it was burning very hot and fast threatening a lot of homes and warehouses in this pittsburg community. now, it happened around 9:00 last night between willow pass road and north parkside drive. the 50-acre vegetation fire reached some backyards in the

harbor lights community and that's where folks used their garden hoses to stop the flames. firefighters believe illegal fireworks started this vegetation fire. >> obviously, we're short staffed this year with the number of stations that have been reduced or closed. and we have reduced our staffing so we are significantly impacted by that this year. so we were able to be successful. >> reporter: neighbors saw a lot of illegal fireworks. they took it upon themselves to drive their cars and patrol this area for any illegal fireworks and possible small fires. now, with the triple-digit heat in pittsburgh a lot of residents say they will keep an eye open for any possibility of -- possibly small fires in pittsburg or what not. so they are going to keep looking. live in pittsburg, i'm da lin. back to you. >> thank you. 6:37. time for our forecast. and boy, if you have been sick of the heat, it's good news for you. >> a lot of folks.

very hot in the east bay triple- digit temperatures coming to an end today. those numbers taking a nosedive. more low clouds and fog at the coastline and some of that already sliding inside the bay too. so yeah, just a few minutes ago it was mostly clear there. now the clouds really beginning to fill in over the bay. we'll see more of that throughout the day as a stronger sea breeze kicks in. some of those winds gusting over 30 miles per hour this morning. financial reporter jason brooks. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne. good news as far as the economy is concerned. we saw a gain of 195,000 jobs in june. that's anywhere from 30 to 40,000 more than what economists were expecting. now, the unemployment rate stayed the same at 7.6%. but that's a reflection of more people looking for work. not all the numbers were good in that report. the underemployment report which includes part-time workers who prefer to be working full time, that actually moved up to 14.3 from 13.8%. but however that jobs gain is important. averaging around 200,000 a month over the past six months which is better than the prior six months to that. now, how the stock market interprets this can go either way today. it will be a light trading day after the 4th of july holiday. a lot of traders make it a four- day weekend but the federal reserve has to determine when to start shrinking its monthly bond purchases and looking at jobs growth as part of that. and because of the better-than-

expected gain a lot of traders may assume that that tapering could occur even sooner than expected. that's pushing treasury yields much higher. and that is a sign of warning that this could indeed happen sooner and that will affect mortgage rates as well which continue to head up as the 10- year note decreases in price sending its yield higher. let's look at the market right now. dow up 78. back over 15,000. nasdaq moving higher by 21. s&p is up by 9. brian and anne, back to you. >> thank you, jason brooks. this morning seattle police are trying to figure out why a heavily armed man was hanging out near a school. the 21-year-old from nevada was arrested near the university of washington campus on wednesday night. officers just happened to run the plates on his truck and then found out it was stolen. they got inside that truck and found out it had multiple stolen guns, body armor and explosives inside. >> they were well made what

appear to be incendiary devices. some would call it a molotov cocktail. >> it's not even like it's like fireworks. like those things are to harm people, to blow things up to shoot people. like why do you need body armor? >> investigators say the trucks and guns were reported stolen out of butte, montana. volunteers from the bay area red cross will go to arizona. they are providing relief to the community he is affected by the yarnell wildfire now 45% contained. a lot of evacuations remain in place. the fire has killed 19 firefighters battling the blaze. and it destroyed more than 100 homes. well, on this friday morning, we're waking up to the news that the strike is over for now. bart union workers held back to work this afternoon. kpix 5 political insider phil matier with former mayor willie brown joining us. we know that the negotiations are far from over. so what is the hang-up right now over the contract talks

between bart and the unions? >> >> money. there is a gap between raises and the killer which is health care and pensions. public employees, one of the hot button issues statewide it's coming to roost right here in the bay area. >> and it started actually in san jose. you recall that mayor chuck reed did a number, he put it on the ballot and ended up losing a number of his police officers. san francisco on the other hand has somehow managed to make sure in a its management of the pension funds produced enough money. oakland, stockton, they all have a problem. >> so going into this when the workers went out on pension and healthcare, who had the upper hand? >> you would never have under any circumstances eager public acceptance if you are discussing pensions and you're discussing healthcare. that just doesn't sell with the public the way salaries do. >> so basically, from the get- go, you think bart management has the upper hand when this

strike happened and that the opinion was not with the workers? >> there is no question. the bart management put on a good show. i don't know if they had sam singer or who they had, but they had somebody who is a genius at laying out who ought to be blamed. and they selected the right items. $71,000 annual salary. $52,000 for benefits. $11,000 for overtime. and 90 bucks for all of your relatives on healthcare. those four things resonate in the minds of people riding those buses particularly since most of them do not make that kind of money. >> you know, you guys, one thing that the unions were trying to sell in all of this was the safety aspect. they say they had safety concerns for riders and themselves. that would be one way to kind of get public opinion in their favor. did that work and are there real safety concerns? >> apparently, it was not well done, as well done as it needed

to be. clearly, safety is everybody's issue. and you had an example of why safety was important about three weeks before that when that maintenance truck ran into something in the tunnel and the end result was a delay of bart. in that had really been the issue -- >> that's what they were doing going into this. once they walked and everybody was scrambling and the bridges backed up, public opinion started to turn quickly. >> well, so first, you got to know that you have to do the job of letting the public know how bad it's going to be individually if there is a strike. >> question: they go back to work now while they are still at the table. it looks to me like bart is still playing hardball with the unions. the union realized that they weren't going to win this thing with the hearts and minds of the people so they're blinking. >> it may be necessary, phil, for the workers to use individual workers as the pr machines and as the talking

heads just like teachers. teachers have always been smart enough to have somebody even if they were not a teacher appear to be a teacher. and you believed them. >> this whole conversation is interesting because i think riders the generally public have felt helpless in this but from what you guys are saying what we think does matter? >> it does. ultimately here's the usual play. if unions especially public employees can't get what they want at the table, the second thing is to try to engage the public and if that fails, the third thing is to try to get politicians like mayor brown here or somebody else to go behind the scenes and put pressure on bart. none of those worked this time. >> i'm not even sure they really tried them, phil, because when i was at the pride parade, no one even mentioned bart which was absolutely an amalgam of people holding public office. and if you don't mention what is going to happen the next day, somebody isn't doing his job. >> back to you guys.

some time to sit and talk. in terms of negotiations, at this point we understand that the two sides are still very much divided on certain hot topic issues including salaries and pensions. but we are again hoping that this 30-day period will give both sides enough time to really hash out those details. reporting live in millbrae, cate caugiran, kpix 5. and breaking news out of richmond this morning. two people were killed in a house fire overnight. the fire broke out shortly before 3 a.m. inside a converted garage on 21st street. firefighters say that a man and woman were trapped inside and died. a third person was taken to the hospital in critical condition. arson investigators don't have an official cause yet. they say wiring inside the converted garage may not have been up to code. fireworks may have started a fire near a pittsburg warehouse last night. this is a live look from chopper 5 above that scene. the fire broke out along bending willow way. people in the area used garden hoses to stop the fire as it
